EPA has selected Desarrollo Integral del Sur, Inc. (DISUR) as a Brownfields Area-Wide Planning Pilot Program recipient. DISUR is focusing this project on a 3,500-acre industrial corridor impacting nine neighborhoods in the rural Municipalities of Peñuelas and Guayanilla. There are approximately 10,991 residents in the corridor, which has been the location of various petrochemical facilities since the 1950s. The industrial corridor now contains mostly non-operating chemical production and petroleum refining facilities and former hazardous waste treatment units. The population within the corridor is declining, and unemployment is approximately 20 percent. The following is a Brownfields Inventory of 13 properties approved by EPA as part of the Area-Wide Planning project between EPA & DISUR.
